Cate Blanchett admits she and her husband Andrew Upton often take on more than they can handle

Cate Blanchett has revealed she has a 'perverse attraction to chaos' as she and her husband Andrew Upton regularly take on more than they can handle.

The couple are parents to four children and the actress admitted she 'surfs' through her hectic lifestyle for months at a time before breaking down in tears from stress.

Speaking to Radio Times, she said: 'I think I have a perverse attraction to chaos. Both my husband and I freelance, I have four children… I think the way I deal with chaos is to surf it until it’s been going on for six months and then you burst into tears.

'But it’s always the small things in life that make you burst into tears. It’s never over the major things, because you can somehow deal with those issues. It’s the little things, like the car not starting.'

Cate, 51, added there is 'emotional' chaos in the couple's home because their children Dashiell, 18, Roman, 16, Ignatius, 11, and Edith, five, all have strong personalities.

She said: 'My husband and I have been together for a long time. It’s wonderful, but it takes work. We’re always biting off more than we can chew – but that’s what makes life interesting.'

The couple, who are both from Australia, previously lived in Brighton and were back in Australia for 10 years before settling in the English countryside.

The family have tried to keep things as simple as possible during the coronavirus lockdown and have been going for long walks and doing online art classes.

It comes after Cate's production company Dirty Films has scored a first-look TV deal with FX Productions.

The lucrative new deal is set to cover all scripted and unscripted programming for FX with further possibility to branch out to its umbrella company's Walt Disney Television divisions.

The news also represents a significant step for the Oscar-winner, who founded the independent film and television company with her playwright husband Andrew.

Cate recently starred in, and executive produced the historical drama miniseries Mrs. America, which aired on FX networks.

American film producer, Coco Francini, who co-produced Mrs. America joined Dirty Films earlier this year.

The success of the show had Gina Balian, the president of programming for FX Entertainment, singing the star's praises.

'Cate Blanchett is a legendary talent, and it was little surprise that her first role as an Executive Producer and star in an American television program – 'Mrs. America' – was such an overwhelming success,' she gushed.

Speaking further about the exciting new deal, Gina said: 'Cate, Andrew and Coco are equally talented at crafting and producing incredible stories, and we welcome this opportunity to support their future television projects under this overall agreement.'

Dirty Film productions has also been home to several other recent success stories, such as the Australian miniseries Stateless, starring Jai Courtney and Yvonne Strahovski.

Hollywood megastar Cate has been the recipient of two Oscars - first for her role in 2013's Blue Jasmine and then The Aviator in 2004.
